Who’s got the beat?

At BES we spend a lot of time developing our steady beat skills.  Research shows that a strong sense of steady beat helps develop reading readiness and reading fluency as well as good patterning skills for math.  Students with a strong sense of steady beat are also more successful in sports.

Jump rope is a fun activity that can help your child practice steady beat.  You can purchase a jump rope for your child at most discount or dollar stores.  Patching or playing patty cake is also a fun way to practice the steady beat.  Try out some of the rhymes below as you help your child develop their steady beat skills.

Miss Suzie had a baby, The baby's name was Tim,
She put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim,
He drank up all the water, He ate up all the soap,
He tried to eat the bathtub, but it wouldn't go down his throat
Miss Suzie called the doctor, Miss Suzie tried the nurse,
Miss Suzie called the lady with the alligator purse,
Mumps said the doctor, Measles said the nurse,
Nothing said the lady with the alligator purse,
Miss Suzie kicked the doctor, Miss suzie hit the nurse,
And then she paid the lady with the alligator purse

Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack

All dressed in black, black, black

With silver buttons, buttons, buttons

All down her back, back, back

She asked her mother

, mother, mother

For fifty cents, cents, cents

To see the elephant,

elephant, elephant

Jump the fence, fence fence

They jumped so high, high, high

They touched the sky, sky, sky

And didn't come back, back, back

Till the fourth of July, July, July

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn around
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, touch the ground,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, show your shoe,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, please skiddooo!

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, climb the stairs,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say your prayers
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, turn out the light,
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, say good night!

went upstairs to kiss a 'fella

made a mistake

and kissed a snake

how many doctors

did it take?
