Dress Code
2010-2011
Dress Code Policy for All Grade Levels
Shirts:
- Solid Color, collared shirts only.
- May have an emblem on the front pocket no larger than the size of a quarter as long as they are in school colors.
- Colors: white, black, gray, yellow or gold, and Kelly green or darker.
- Must be long enough to tuck in.
- Must be tucked in at all times.
- May include spirit wear sweatshirts.
- May wear undershirts under dress code shirt in white, black, gray, yellow or gold, or green.
Don’ts: multi-colored shirts (even in school colors); oversized shirts (in length or width; any shirt that does not have a collar (t-shirts); collared shirts with a revealing or low neckline.
Please note: Students may not wear black on black combinations of shirt and pant.
Pants:
- Solid color in appropriate size.
Colors: Khaki (various shades from stone to camel) and black.
- Boys - pants or shorts.
- Girls - pants, walking shorts, skirts, capris, and skorts – length must be no more that two inches above the top of the knee. Plaid dresses, skirts, or skorts purchased at the BHS school store are acceptable.
- Acceptable styles include corduroy and flat cargo style pockets.
- Must be worn at the hips or waist.
Don’ts: pant with colors or designs on pockets or legs; yoga pants; oversized pants (in length or width); pants, shorts, or skirts with frayed hems; cut-off shorts; any other color pants, including brown; gym shorts or sweatpants.
Belts:
- Must be worn with all pants with belt loops.
- Solid color - black, khaki, or brown.
- No lettering or decorations on belts.
- Plain belt buckles only.
- Belts must fit appropriately; extra length may not dangle from the waist.
Don’ts: belts that have studs or are ornate in design; metal or gold-toned belts; ribbon belts; belts that do not fit through belt loops on pants.
Shoes:
- Solid color or blend of the following colors:
- Colors: white, brown, black, green, silver, gray, gold or yellow.
- Appropriate styles: tennis shoes, dress shoes, sandals, “potato” shoes, “hiking” boots.
Don’ts: flip-flops, cowboy boots, shoes with unreasonably high heels (2+ inches).
Accessories:
- Backpacks are not permitted in classrooms for books or personal items.
- All accessories should be in school appropriate colors.
Socks:
- School colors: black, white, khaki, green, yellow or gold.
- Socks with designs or other colors are not acceptable.
Headwear:
- Head coverings will not be worn in the school building unless approved by an administrator.
- For girls: ponytail holders, headbands, and hair bows should be in the following colors only–white, black, green, yellow or gold, khaki.
- Headbands my only be worn if they are holding back hair.
- Hair color must be natural and non-distracting.
Jewelry:
- Accessories may not be distracting or disruptive.
- Tattoos and body piercing (nose, eyebrows, tongue, etc.) are prohibited.
- Earrings for boys should be reasonably sized and not be distracting in class.
- Earrings for girls should be resonably sized. Hoops should be no larger that a quarter; earrings should not dangle more than one inch.
Outerwear:
Students may wear their choice of outerwear to school; however, any outerwear may not be worn inside the building. All outerwear must be stored in lockers.
- Light weight jackets worn inside the building must be a solid color or a blend of the following colors: black, white, yellow or gold, green, khaki, or gray.
- No emblems, designs, inappropriate writing, or insignias are permitted on jackets worn in the classrooms.
Friday Spirit Wear:
Please note these important facts about spirit wear:
- Friday spiritwear is a privilege and not a guarantee. This option will be rewarded based on the students’ ability to follow the dress code policy during the week and to reward students for perfect attendance during the previous week.
- Any student who has a dress code infraction during the week will not be permitted to wear spirit wear on Friday.

Only students who have been at school all week with no checkouts or tardies from Thursday at 1:00 pm to Thursday at 1:00 pm are permitted to wear spiritwear on Fridays.
- Students not participating in Friday spirit wear are expected to follow the regular dress code policy.
- If students do not follow Friday Spirit Wear procedures, the priviledge will be revoked and administrative detention will be assigned.
Spirit Wear Shirts:
- Buford spiritwear shirts and sweatshirts – must have the Buford insignia or logo.
- Collared shirts in a combination of dress code colors (example: white and green striped).
- Homemade spirit shirts (must be approved by an administrator in advance).
Spirit Wear Pants:
- Blue jeans that fit appropriately and do not contain any holes, rips, designs, colors, patches or frayed edges.
- Traditional/green camouflage pants.
Other:
- Girls may wear ribbon belts in school colors only.
- Belts must be worn with all pants with belt loops.
Don'ts: Solid T-shirts, including those in acceptable school colors, and oversized clothing.
Athletic Game-Day Clothing:
Athletes may wear clothing outside the dress code policy on game day if approved by an administrator. It is the coach’s responsibility to make the request with an administrator, and he/she will inform the athletes of the dates and appropriate clothing.
