Buford DECA State Competition 2022

Buford DECA traveled to Atlanta, Ga to compete at the 2022 Georgia DECA State Career Development Conference (CDC) Thursday, January 27th - Saturday, January 29th. Buford DECA took 13 students, who qualified at the regional level in December, to represent Buford at the state level. When students were not competing, they were in leadership sessions with guest speakers learning about various topics such as Becoming a Leader Others Want to Follow, Success Starts With Communication, Interviews That Impress, and more. Buford DECA students also got to attend an Atlanta Hawks game, enjoy meals together, network with DECA members from across the state, and sharpen their employability skills. We would like to give a HUGE congratulations to the following two students who placed in the top 8 in their category and have earned a spot to compete at the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) in April in Atlanta, Ga.

Ava Jones, Freshman - Principles of Marketing
Benton Jennenman, Sophomore - Automotive Services Marketing

It was both Ava and Benton's first time competing, and they did not let that hold them back from representing Buford DECA in the best way possible. All students who competed spent many hours reviewing vocabulary, taking practice tests, and practicing role-plays with their advisor, Jordan Simmons, and their peers. Way to go Buford DECA - the future is bright!

Congratulations to Kevin Alonso, a BHS Alumnus class of 2021!
Kevin is a Sports Marketing student taught by BHS’ Mrs. Jordan Simmons.  Kevin began interning at Mighty 8th Media Advertising Agency in Downtown Buford over the summer.  This December, Mighty 8th asked Kevin to start working full-time.  Kevin is currently attending the University of North Georgia, where he is pursuing a degree in Marketing. Kevin can have this unique opportunity because of the connections made and support from the Buford City Schools Career & Technical Education Advisory Council. His hard work and determination, coupled with the concepts he learned in the Marketing program, gave him the perfect opportunity to apply what he has learned in a real-world setting. This is one example of how Buford’s Career Tech Classes prepare our students for college and their careers. Mrs. Simmons said, “We are so happy to have local businesses that partner with us and have our students’ best interest in mind and provide opportunities like this. I am so proud of Kevin and everything he has accomplished. He is one of the hardest working students I have had the privilege to teach, and I cannot wait to see what else his future holds.”
Kevin shared, "Pursuing CTE during my high school career was the single most vital decision in my academic life. CTE offered me the opportunity to prepare for life and learn more about myself and my interests. Because of CTE, I was able to discover my passion for marketing.  Having found my interest in marketing, I was led to complete my Associates of Arts in Business Administration while at Buford High School. This has expedited my educational and career path allowing me to graduate in May of 2023 with my Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Georgia. For reference, I graduated from BHS in May of 2021, so in just 1 more year I will be 20 years old, debt-free, and with my bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, CTE provided me with the knowledge and skills required to pursue my internship at Mighty 8th, which has now evolved into a full-time position doing what I enjoy. The offering of a CTE program enables BHS to better prepare the next generation for real life, by arming them with the real-world skills and knowledge needed to be truly
